Activity 12: Finding my niche The following exercise may help you to decide on your niche. Imagine your ideal work day (Barnard, Deyzel & Makhanya 2011:12) • What time of day is it? • Where are you? If travelling, how are you travelling? • Describe the place where you work. • Who are the people with whom you come into contact? • How are you dressed? • What is the first thing you do at work every day? • What skills and talents will you use today? • Will you sit at a desk? What is on the desk? • What do your immediate surroundings look like? • Are the surroundings quiet or noisy? • Is your preferred job predictable or fast-paced? • Will you be working alone, as part of a team or both? • What kind of supervisor do you have, if any? Describe this person’s managerial style? • Will you stay in the same location most of your day? Travel? Move around? • What passions, interests or values form part of your work? • How are you compensated for your work? • How do you feel after your work today? • What do you do after work? • How do you feel when it is time for the next workday? It is easier to visualise yourself within a specific work context if you have enough information about the specific context.
